The geography of Egypt influenced the ancient people there in many ways. Water features served as a large factor in the life of ancient Egyptians. Rivers were a necessity because they provided a water source. The Egyptians could use the water to drink, to make mud for building, and ultimately to water their crops. The Nile River was important for many of the same reasons. Settlements began around the Nile River because of the resources it gave. When the Nile flooded, particles of silt covered the floodplains. Ancient Egyptians could use this soil to plants crops in, because fertile soil worked so well to farm with. The Nile's water could be used to fill irrigation canals to carry water through the croplands. Egyptians also determined the flooding cycle by the flooding of the Nile, because it flooded on a regular basis. The rhythmic flooding determined the planting and harvesting seasons of the ancient Egyptians. The Nile, among the other rivers in Egypt, influenced the agriculture with its flooding, water, and silt. Deserts were also common physical features in ancient Egypt. Two deserts, the Eastern and Western Deserts, bordered parts of Ancient Egypt. Because the deserts were so hard to cross without certain supplies, enemies could not easily set foot in Egypt. Egypt was protected by the deserts, because they provided a natural barrier to keep away unwanted visitors.
